Why We Love Avocado Oil for Skin

You’ve probably already got Avocado in your daily or weekly routine, who can’t go past smashed Avocado on toast? Full of essential fatty acids, Avocado is not only beneficial to your body, but to your skin when applied topically. As one of nature’s superhero ingredients, it helps skin maintain hydration and minimizes damage from free radicals.

What is Avocado Oil?

No surprises here, Avocado oil is derived from an Avocado but more specifically it’s extracted from the pulp of fruit from the Persea Americana plant. Nearly 70% of Avocado oil is oleic acid, a monounsaturated omega-9 fatty acid which the body cannot produce on its own and is known to help with inflammation. It also contains carotenoids and is a good source of Vitamins A and E which enhance skin membrane health.

What are the Benefits of Avocado Oil for Skin?

  • Minimises Inflammation: Due to the high concentration of fatty acids and antioxidants in Avocado oil it promotes wound healing and overall skin health. Some studies have shown that applying a topical cream containing Avocado oil has alleviated and improved the symptoms of psoriasis.
  • Helps Skin Maintain Hydration: It’s an excellent source of enrichment for dry, damaged, or chapped skin as it has emollient and occlusive properties so it both softens the skin and traps humectants and emollients onto the skin.
  • Minimises Damage: Rich in antioxidants carotenoids, tocopherols and plant sterols which are free radical fighting and help reduce oxidative stress on the skin and helps protect the skin from environmental damage.
  • Promotes Collagen Synthesis: Some studies have shown that Avocado oil helps inhibit the enzyme lysyl oxidase which breaks down collagen.
