How to Change Your Morning Skin Routine


Feel like your morning skin routine is stuck in a rut and in need of a pick me up? Your morning routine is the most important way to prepare and protect your skin from the environmental elements it’s faced with each day. By not protecting your skin from pollution, wind, sun, dirt, and grime, you’re giving free radicals an open invitation to camp out on your skin and cause havoc.

Your morning skincare routine is an opportunity to notice changes within your skin. It’s not a one size fits all approach and should change slightly with the seasons. Here’s how to reset your skincare routine for a better complexion.

#1 Strip Your Products Back

Less is more. Instead of using lots of active ingredients and 12 step routines, strip your products and your steps right back to the essentials that your skin needs. Cleanser, serum, and moisturiser are your three skin essentials in the morning. A cleanser washes away the sweat that accumulated on your face overnight. Next, an antioxidant serum helps protect your skin barrier and fights free radical damage throughout the day. It’s also going to help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Follow the serum with a moisturiser, this if going to create a barrier over your skin, trapping moisture and fend off free radicals throughout the day.

#2 Match Your Creams for the Season

Now that winter (and the artic chill) is upon us, it’s time to swap your moisturiser to a richer cream, especially to one that contains natural oils. Natural oils help protect the skin barrier as they not only create a layer to trap moisture but also contain compounds and nutrients that help repair the skin barrier and reduce redness.

#3 SPF is Non-Negotiable

Prevention is always better than a cure and SPF is also going to make you look younger as most of skin ageing is cause by UV rays. What’s a better incentive than to pop your SPF on each morning to keep your skin looking healthy and radiant? Look for moisturisers that contain UVA and UVB protection and apply SPF even when indoors.

#4 Cleanse Properly

You don’t need to double cleanse in the morning, but its necessary to cleanse away the dirt and grime that's accumulated on your face overnight. By cleansing you’re going to have a better base for your makeup, so it will stay on longer and you'll avoid that 3pm T-zone shine.

#5 Exfoliate Twice a Week

Remove the dull, dead skin cell layer to reveal smooth and brighter skin. By exfoliating in the morning, you are going to allow for deeper absorption of your products that follow.

#6 Check Expiry Dates

If you’ve been using the same moisturiser for the past two years, throw it in the bin. You may have a go-to moisturiser that you don't use as often as you should but if you’ve been using the same moisturiser for the past two years, it means you’re putting ingredients on your face that aren’t doing anything. All skincare products have a shelf life and when the active ingredients are exposed to air, they become less active and don’t give your face the nutrients they should.

Your skincare routine is not the only important routine to change in the morning. By taking the following steps you can get more out of your day.

Wake Up at the Same Time Every Morning: Waking up at the same time every day has a variety of different benefits including improved sleep quality, sharper focus and alertness, reduced irritability, and better immune system function. The key is consistency seven days a week, so pick a realistic time to go to sleep and wake up based on your work schedule and morning routine.

Start the Day with Exercise: Exercising in the morning is extremely beneficial to not only your immune system but your energy and productivity levels. Exercising also helps improves your sleep quality and sleep is one of the most important tools at helping your skin repair from the damage done throughout the day.

Fuel Your Body: Breakfast is essential, it literally breaks the fast and get’s your metabolism moving. Missing breakfast negatively effects your short-term memory and cognitive performance.

Keep the Phone Away: It’s tempting to grab your phone first thing in the morning and check emails and social profiles, but this is doing more harm than good. By immediately reaching for your phone, it can increase your stress levels, distract you from other tasks and leave you overwhelmed. Who wants that first thing in the morning!

Start Your Day the Night Before: By planning your morning the night before, you remove some of the decision making for the next day and free up time to complete what’s important to you. Having a simple to-do list will ensure you keep your morning on track.
