Meet Professor Derek Richard

The respected scientist we consider our guiding light, Professor Richard and his team are world leaders in the fight against cancer and ageing. His ongoing research and expertise have inspired our ELLUS & KRUE anti-ageing essentials.

At the heart of ELLUS & KRUE is our partnership with Queensland’s Cancer & Ageing Research Foundation. Professor Derek Richard heads an internationally regarded research team of scientists, researchers, and oncologists dedicated to developing a universal cancer treatment that may also positively impact ageing diseases such as Alzheimer’s.

Long-time admirers of Professor Richard’s work, we were incredibly proud to collaborate with him on the development of our signature anti-ageing essential: EPI-gN™ Serum.

We sat down with Professor Richard to talk about his research and what it means for the future of skincare.

What is the process of ageing?

Ageing is a completely natural process. The underlying cause of ageing is genetic damage, which affects our epigenetics. When most people turn 40 years old, their cells start to switch off the DNA repair processes, meaning genetic damage to our genome occurs at a faster rate and this can lead to diseases such as cancer, Alzheimer’s and osteoporosis. Ageing is most noticeable in your face when the damaged skin cells stop producing elastin and collagen, resulting in a slackening of the skin.

From the sale of ELLUS & KRUE products, we have funds flowing back to the laboratory, fundamental research, funding clinical trials, and making a really big difference.

Can you explain how sun damage contributes to ageing?

Sun damage causes mutations within your genetic code and skin cells by making cells less fit and not function properly, so you start to look older. Applying sunscreen filters out UV light, so when the UV hits your skin it’s filtered out before it hits the genetic code of your cells. UV light is associated with rapid ageing of the skin and that’s why people who spend lots of time outdoors without sunscreen look older.

What is the future of ageing?

Well it’s going to be transformative in the next ten years. We know it’s a treatable condition, and if we can treat it early enough, we will transform people’s lives. The first therapeutics will hit the market and hopefully it's ours. We understand that ageing can be slowed, and our quality of life can be increased.

What does your research mean for skincare?

After the age of 40 our risk of getting cancer doubles every year until around the age of 85. If we get cancer, those cells become immortal, effectively they live forever. Our first therapeutic is designed to hit that switch and make them mortal again. The genetic code falls to pieces after our therapeutic treats them, and they die because they aged so rapidly.

The other therapeutic we are developing is designed to slow down the ageing process. Rather than our body switching off the repair system that looks after the genetic code, we switch it back on. The effect of our therapeutic will be to reduce the appearance of ageing, so you won’t have the rapid ageing appearance after the age of 40-45 and will feel healthier and have a better quality of life.”

What does it mean to partner with ELLUS & KRUE?

Our partnership with ELLUS & KRUE is amazing. From the sale of ELLUS & KRUE products, we have funds flowing back to the laboratory, fundamental research, funding clinical trials and making a really big difference. We are developing therapeutics that reduce the risk of cancer and reduce the risk of getting diseases such as Alzheimer’s but this costs millions of dollars to fund.

With ELLUS & KRUE, we’ve launched a cutting-edge product with the EPI-gN™ Serum. It has taken over a year to formulate and it contains not only the right ingredients but also enough of those ingredients to produce real results. The serum really enhances and improves the look and feel of your skin and reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.”
